On the road again…..

by Donna Cain,

Always loved the old Willie Nelson song, “On the Road Again” and when we left the Captain Freeman Inn for our Thanksgiving trip to visit family that song came to my mind. This has been a very eventful November for us as we sold Brewster by the Sea on November 9th to Amy Chesnut! Amy is from California and has always dreamed of being an innkeeper. We could not be more pleased to pass on our beloved BBTS to such a caring and talented person.

We have been planning this road trip for several months to have Thanksgiving with our daughter and family in Dallas, to get our son’s truck to him in Nashville and to spend time with my Aunt Carrie who just moved to Nashville. The trip down to Nashville took us 2 days as Byron was in our son’s old Toyota truck with Harrison, and I followed behind in the more comfortable family car ( I was the lucky one as I enjoyed listening to music the whole way and just followed the tan truck where I could see a wagging tail through the rear window:)

We had a few days to ourselves to explore Nashville and found a darling home rental called the Artful Lodger. The owners have created a wonderful respite that was a perfect choice for our weary souls.

We could not have been more pleased with the east side location with a wonderful park next door, a lovely neighborhood of older craftsmen homes and many wonderful restaurants and shops close by.

Harrison loved having room to run, and we saw many deer during our morning walks.

_blc2710We picked up our son Nathan from Fort Campbell and were so thrilled that he was able to get time off from the army for our family time.

We visited the Frist museum were we saw a wonderful Samurai exhibit.

We just loved Nashville…from their beautiful skyline to the…

_blc2774fascinating history and shopping (along with great barbecue and steak).

_blc2722We spent an afternoon visiting Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage  where we learned about our seventh president, his Revolutionary battles and his beloved home in Nashville. I have taken a new interest in American history as we are putting together the pieces of Captain Freeman’s life. Andrew Jackson led quite a controversial life, and it was interesting to connect the pieces of living a life in the south vs the north. As a political and military leader, champion of the common man, and slave-owning cotton planter, Andrew Jackson was at the center of these controversies.

_blc2806I am very close to my mother’s youngest sister, Carrie Berry! She recently moved from the Berkshires to Nashville to be closer to her son, Scott. While I miss not having her close, I am just so happy that she has constant companionship in her new home with her son.
_blc2736One of the many blessing of being an innkeeper is connecting with guests over the years. We have VERY dear friends in Nashville who were guests at Brewster by the Sea many years ago. We knew while being in Nashville that we had to catch up with Jim and Yvonne. When we contacted them by e-mail they invited us over for breakfast. Byron and I were just so thrilled and touched when they served us mimosas and our blueberry pancakes:)

_blc2769We awoke bright and early on Monday for our road trip to Dallas. I think Harrison is wondering what in the world is going on with these new behavior patterns?????

_blc2824We had a smooth trip and were so excited to see our daughter Jenn, her husband Darin and our wonderful grandson Trenton. They built a beautiful new home complete with two guest rooms, so we could not be more comfortable. Jennifer and Trenton even picked out two beautiful orchids that they placed beside our beds. The next day we played games with Trenton and first on the order of business …having lunch at Donna’s favorite restaurant Pappasito’s. While we have Mexican food on Cape Cod, nothing compares to the wonderful fahittas that we savored together.

We were all happy campers with full tummies….

Trenton has a lovable black lab Shiner, black kitty Rockie and Jenn’s cat Sugar. Thankfully they are all getting along!

Harrison was amazed with the doggie door

_blc2891and we were tickled to see that all the pets use it.

_blc2887 And Harrison is continually playing with Rockie. Not quite sure if the cat is pleased or feels harassed.

img_0257We had a delicious Thanksgiving meal with plenty of homemade pies. I must confess Trenton and I had pie for breakfast this morning. Jenn says Nanny is a bad influence.

img_3922We got to watch Trenton in action with his karate class….

And last night we watched movies and enjoyed Bacon Cheddar Popcorn…..imagine that. Bacon in popcorn! It was divine.

What a wonderful treat for us to connect with family! We feel very blessed. Looking forward to getting back to the inn and preparing for our special weekend, Brewster for the Holidays. We are placing fresh wreaths on all of the exterior windows this year, which should be an interesting project for Byron.

Watch for our shopping countdown on Facebook and Instagram. We are posting some of our favorite gift ideas that are local, unique and creative for that hard to buy for loved one.

Happy Holidays Everyone!
